The Pilot is finished in stunning Rich Burgundy over Cream Paintwork with a beautiful contrasting Burgundy Hide. The Pilot was restored some 11 years ago by specialist Classic Car Restorer Barry Smith, of Barry Smith Cars. The Pilot was purchased by Barry on behalf of the British novelist Louis De Bernieres, best known for " Captain Corellis Mandolin " a copy of which is included with the sale. The customer request to Barry was that he wanted to have his car restored and literally watch it come back to life. The process began in 2002 and took 18 months to complete. during this time the Pilot was stripped, bodily rebuilt, a Brand New Engine was fitted, the mechanics were all overhauled as were the brakes, a New Electronic Ignition system was purchased from the USA, New Radiator and the 6 volt charging system upgraded to 12 volt, including a commercial grade Dynamo as fitted to the Police Pilots. The interior was treated to New Burgundy Seating using 5 hides and the best Wilton Carpets. The Pilot retains its Bakelite Facia, ash tray, Plastic Coated Steering Wheel and wonderful Art Deco period Radio. The vacuum wipers have been disconnected and fitted with a modern electric motor, the working semaphores have also been disconnected in favour of modern discreet flashers. The Pilot also has been fitted with a modern spin on oil filter conversion and inertia real seat belts to both front and rear seats. The Ford Pilots were produced at the famous Ford Dagenham Works in Essex between 1947 and mid 1951, some 21487 units were built. Standard equipment included in this luxury saloon included the huge Butler Chrome Headlamps and a Heater manufactured by Clayton Dewandre. The fitting of a Jackall Jacking System was also standard equipment and is still in working order, lifting the front or rear of the car should you need to. The Keys are original and the steering lock / switch is original. Included in the sale is the correct V8 Pilot Instruction Book published in August 1949. Also included is a Book " The story of the V8 Pilot " written by Mick Gamble. The Pilot represents post war luxury motoring at its finest, this car will allow someone to experience first hand that special period in time.
